Nap Transitions

Nap Transitions Are Hard

Every time your baby drops a nap, there’s an adjustment period. Schedules shift. Fussiness increases. Bedtime becomes a moving target.

This is normal. It’s also temporary.

Here’s how to navigate each transition.

4 to 3 Naps (Around 4-5 Months)

This one usually happens naturally. As your baby’s wake windows lengthen, the 4th nap becomes hard to get.

Signs they’re ready: – Fighting the 4th nap – 4th nap is pushing bedtime too late – Handling longer wake windows without getting overtired

What to do: – Follow your baby’s lead – If they skip the 4th nap, move bedtime earlier – Be flexible — some days will be 4 naps, some will be 3

3 to 2 Naps (Around 7-9 Months)

This is often the trickiest transition. At 6 months, most babies still need 3 naps. By 8-9 months, most are ready for 2.

Signs they’re ready: – Consistently refusing the 3rd nap for several days – Wake windows are extending naturally – First two naps are getting longer

Signs they’re NOT ready: – Nap lengths shorten when you try 2 naps – Still tired at the 2-hour mark – Very fussy in the late afternoon

How to think about it: Don’t think of it as “dropping” the 3rd nap. Think of it as the first two naps lengthening as wake windows extend.

What to do: – Base it on the first nap. Short first nap (30 min) = probably a 3-nap day. Long first nap = probably a 2-nap day. – If you can’t get the 3rd nap for 3 days in a row and both naps are short, space the two naps out to get through the day. – Stretch the window between nap 1 and nap 2 to protect the window before bed. – Move bedtime earlier temporarily (as early as 6:15pm if needed). – Use the carrier or stroller for the afternoon nap if baby is struggling.

Sample schedule at 7 months (2 naps): – 7:00am — Wake – 9:30-11:15am — Nap 1 – 2:00-4:00pm — Nap 2 – 7:00pm — Asleep

If naps are short and you can’t get a 3rd: Try quiet time in the carrier — strap baby in snug, facing in, walk around singing or dancing. Think of it as rest, even if they don’t sleep.

2 to 1 Nap (Around 13-18 Months)

This is often the hardest transition. Many parents try to make it too early.

When to consider it: – 13 months or older (ideally closer to 15-18 months) – Baby is refusing the 2nd nap even when you cap the first nap – Baby is happy and playing at usual nap time (not fussy)

Signs they’re NOT ready: – Under 13 months – Fussy at usual nap time (they’re tired, not ready to drop) – Only resisting for a day or two

How to hold onto 2 naps longer: Cap the first nap at 1 hour. This builds enough sleep pressure for the 2nd nap. If they still won’t take it, try capping at 40 minutes, then 30 minutes.

How to transition to 1 nap: Move the morning nap gradually: – Start at 11am – Move to 11:30 – Move to 12:00 – Move to 12:30 – Land at 1:00pm

If you can only get one short nap: Try napping at 10:30-11am and add a catnap “on-the-go” around 4pm. Move bedtime earlier (even 6:15pm) until baby adjusts.

Dropping the Last Nap (2.5-3.5 Years)

This one is hard for parents too — you’re losing your midday break.

Signs they’re ready: – Bedtime is getting later and later – Nap is interfering with nighttime sleep – Even when you move the nap earlier (11:30/12pm), they still struggle at bedtime

What to try first: Cap the nap and see if that helps bedtime. If it doesn’t…

How to drop it: – Know that your toddler will be exhausted and grumpy in the afternoon for a while. – Avoid the car or stroller around usual nap time until they adjust — they’ll fall asleep. – Move bedtime earlier temporarily (no earlier than 6:30pm). – Consider “quiet time” in place of nap — rest even if they don’t sleep.

General Tips for All Transitions

Be flexible. Some days will go well, some won’t. That’s normal during transitions.

Don’t turn naptime into a battle. If it’s not happening, take a walk outside. Fresh air helps everyone.

Watch your baby, not the clock. Every baby is different.

Remember: If you’re stressed, your baby feels it too. Take a breath. This is temporary.
